Music Monday- Mindy Gledhill

Music Monday-Remember how I mentioned Mindy Gledhill was coming to town? Well she did and I was excited to get the chance to listen to her music while taking photos of her as well. It was the perfect combination.

And she had a seat saved for Brynn.

She even rocked a pair of Proofs.
I loved watching Brynn throughout the show and how excited she was to hear and meet Mindy again. She is truly a sweet little spirit that girl is.

Okay...stay tuned because I am going to be sharing more photos of her concert and GIVING AWAY a copy of Mindy's latest cd this week!!

It's a Candy Land - Wonder Land

The lolly pops and snowflakes were hung.

The candy and soda bar were filled.

The chairs and table set.

The anticipation... the months of planning... December 16th was  finally was here.

I am sorry for the delay in this post- but I have had a really hard time writing about this night. Mostly, because there are few words that can even begin to describe what it is why like.

But in summary, it was "Magical."

Not only was the venue decorated like a Candy Land-Wonder Land but I got to meet and listen to Mindy for the first time in person!
My most memorable moment: watching little Brynn Jones jump up and dance around at the first glimpse of Mindy
That alone, made all the long hours and hard work well worth it.

Front and center Brynn (Mindy's number one fan) sat mesmerized by the music...
what a beautiful night.

And besides, bringing awareness to hundreds of people (if not thousands with the news coverage we got) about what Rett Syndrome- we were able to raise about $17,000 and still counting to the Rett Syndrome Foundation for finding medicine to help alleviate symptoms and one day hopefully find a cure.

See...words can't describe.

My only complaint....that I didn't nearly take enough photos.

Note to self when hosting an event...HIRE A PHOTOGRAPHER even when you are a photographer.

Needless to say, the event was a huge success.
Brynn was exhausted. I was exhausted....we all were exhausted.

Thanks to all those of you who supported us in the event.  My heart is full for all the love and friends who were willing to give their time and talent.
Thank You.

And a special Thank you to Mindy Gledhill for coming out and bringing peace and joy into the lives who listen to your music every day...

especially in the life of a little girl who doesn't have the words to verbalize her thoughts and feelings.

I think to her, you are her voice.

And it continues....

Guess who made cover of our local news paper?

Music is medicine for Eagle girl with genetic disorder:
by Katy Moeller

When Makita Jones’ daughter needed dental surgery this past spring, the surgical staff asked her to bring along something that would comfort the 6-year-old.

For most kids, a comforting item might be a blanket or a teddy bear. But Brynn Jones is a little different. She has a developmental disorder known as Rett syndrome.

Rett syndrome is caused by a genetic mutation. It radically affects a child’s brain development and function, affecting her learning, speech and motor skills. Children with Rett syndrome experience sudden bouts of screaming and crying that can last hours.

“The only thing that comforts her is music,”said Makita Jones, a 37-year-old mother of four. When Brynn’s big brothers babysit her, they know to play music if she needs soothing.

Jones brought her iPhone to the surgery, and the medical staff piped the music to speakers in the room. Everyone listened to Brynn’s favorite — indie pop singer Mindy Gledhill.

“The surgeon commented to me that they all liked it,” Jones said. ”They said it made them happy.”

Gledhill, who lives in Provo, Utah, was planning a tour of the Northwest and reached out to fans on her blog about coming to Boise. When she heard about Brynn, she agreed to a benefit concert at the Rose Room.

“There’s no award or accolade that I could receive that would make me feel more honored,” Gledhill said from Provo Monday.

The 30-year-old singer has had a busy year. She had her third child in August and she released her fourth album, “Winter Moon: Songs for Christmas.” This month, the TV show “Bones” featured her song “Anchor.”

Gledhill will meet her biggest little fan on Friday, and all proceeds from the concert will go to the International Rett Syndrome Foundation, headquartered in Cincinnati.

Rett syndrome is often misdiagnosed as autism or cerebral palsy. The mutation occurs before birth, but symptoms do not appear until after 6 to 18 months.

Brynn was progressing until she was about 2. But her parents did notice some unusual things.

“She didn’t cuddle. She was almost 1 the first time I was holding her, and she laid her head on my shoulder,” Jones said.

Her ability to verbalize the words she had learned by age 2 began diminishing.

Brynn cannot communicate verbally, and she’s unable to do sign language because of a loss of control over the movement in her hands. Her hands clap together involuntarily and repetitively.

Her family is learning to communicate with her through a special computer that reads her retinas. Her parents can ask her questions, and the computer tells them what she’s saying through what she looks at on the screen.

“We’ve learned her favorite color is pink, and she knows the names of the cartoons she watches.”

Her favorite song is Gledhill’s “All the Pennies.” The lyrics include:

All the pennies in the wishing wells

All the diamonds Tiffany’s could sell

All the riches put together

All the sunny California weather

Could not make me love you any better.

Brynn is a first-grader at Cecil Andrus Elementary School, where she is in primarily special-education classes. She sees a developmental therapist twice a week.

Researchers estimate that Rett syndrome occurs in about 1 in 10,000 to 23,000 live female births; it is a mutation of the X chromosome and very rare in males.

There is no known cure, but at least one drug is in clinical trials.

“In my daughter's lifetime, if she can have more use of her hands and communicate a little more, if she can have more normalcy, that’s going to be a gift,” Jones said.

Despite everything, Brynn is a happy child. She smiles and giggles a lot — exposing a front tooth she lost recently and another ready to go soon.

She loves shopping, swimming (with life jacket), riding therapy horses and spending time with her brothers.

“She loves to be with people. She just looks at you like you hung the moon,” Jones said. “You can’t help but smile or be happy when you’re around her.”

The Healing Power of Music

The five day countdown officially begins...(whoa butterflies in my stomach as I think of that...) FIVE DAYS until the benefit concert with Mindy Gledhill!

For Music Monday...I have this news report that our local news station did on Brynn and the power of music. Take a looksie.

Did you know there is a research study going on right now with a pill that helps aliviate symptoms of Rett Syndrome? The money we earn from the benefit concert will go towards helping these girls have a chance at a normal life.
For tickets or donations go HERE.

Besitos,

P.S. Here is the News Report Text

EAGLE, Idaho - A little girl's rare disease is bringing an internationally known folk singer to Boise.

Brynn Jones, 6, of Eagle was born a normal child but by the time she was two years old, her parents say her health took a turn for the worst.

"We knew something was wrong but didn't know what," said Brynn's mother Makita Jones.

By the time Brynn was four years old, doctors diagnosed her with a rare disease called Rett Syndrome. To make matters worst, she had a rare gene mutation of the disease making her one of only 13 other people in the world to suffer this type of Rett Syndrome.

"Doctors told us, you know more about it than we do because it's so rare of a disease," said Brynn's father Steve Jones.

Rett Syndrome is a neurological disease mainly found in girls. The disease affects learning ability, mood, sensory perception, movement, eating and speech.

In Brynn's case, she has lost the ability to talk or control her hands.

"She can't communicate with us and so that's frustrating for her to get us to understand what she needs," Makita said.

Hope for Brynn came in the form of music. For reasons unknown, the music of folk singer Mindy Gledhill has an affect on Brynn.

"We discovered Mindy Gledhill two years ago and noticed that when we were playing the songs, Brynn would calm down. Music is very healing and calming and can bring about good emotion," Makita said.

Friends of the Jones family who happened to know how to get in touch with Gledhill told the singer about Brynn's condition. It didn't take long for Gledhill to offer to come to Boise to perform in a benefit concert to raise awareness about Rett Syndome and money for research to cure the disease.

Gledhill is scheduled to perform this Friday night at the Rose Room on 718 W. Idaho St. in Downtown Boise. Doors open at 6:30 and the performance starts at 7:00. Ticket prices are $18 for adults and $12 for children. All proceeds will go toward research to help cure Rett Syndrome.

Meet Brynn...

Brynn at our filming of her video

It seems like in between changing a million runny diapers, church assignments, editing Christmas photos, and taking care of a sick extra needy little one,  I am having a hard time focusing. I sit down to write a post and the only thing I have on the brai  is our benefit concert coming up next Friday. Sorry if I am scattered lately!

Yikes... it is only 9 days away!

I fall asleep and wake up to thinking about how we can market this show- where to drop off more fliers- who to email and call... what it will be like....will people show up?

All the anxieties that come along with putting yourself out there.

It has been a tad more difficult marketing a benefit concert in the busy season of December- especially for something that most people are unfamiliar with: Rett Syndrome. I have to admit that I too didn't know much about it besides the brief mention in our text book.

Then, one day I was reading my friend Maren's blog and she had just discovered that her little girl, who once could say words,  had began to regress... the diagnosis...Rett Syndrome. I couldn't imagine as a mother what that would feel like and I found my self sobbing as I read her honest and heart fealt posts.

Then, soon after,  I met another little girl in my church named Brynn who also had Rett Syndrome. She has won the hearts of those she comes in contact with. Her beautiful smile is the only thing you can focus on, for Brynn always seems to be smiling.   I had heard that she was a really big fan of Mindy Gledhill and her music is the only thing that soothes her when she becomes upset.

So, when I contacted Mindy about coming and doing a show here in Boise- she was thrilled to help us with the cause.

Here is a little video on Rett Syndrome to understand more about it.

Don't forget! to spread the word- if you aren't local.
You can get your tickets or donate your ticket to someone if you can't attend.
For purchasing or donating go here. - every dollar counts!

I can't wait for next Friday!

Hourglass.

You may be sick of my obsession with Mindy Gledhill's music... but I was listening to this song...I can't listen to it without tearing up.

It is exactly how I feel about little man. Take a listen.

Hourglass
Little boy, when you speak
I can't help but kiss your cheeks
I love the way you grab my hands
And tell me all about your plans
Rocket high, comets fly
You and I could take a ride
And fly away to Neverland
And give our best to Peter Pan
When you reach for the stars
Don't forget who you are
And please don't turn around and grow up way too fast
See the sand in my grasp
From the first to the last
Every grain becomes a memory of the past
Oh, life's an hourglass
Life's an hourglass
Story's read, prayer is said
Close your eyes sleepyhead
While angels linger in your dreams
And hold you in their feathered wings
Just like you, I was small
Not that long ago at all
I wish you all the happiness
That God gives freely if you ask

Mom of the Month goes to...

photos by julia wade

In celebration of October being Rett Syndrome Awareness month....
I am spot lighting a mom who inspires me.
She is amazing.... she always has been. She used to be my neighbor. Her entries in her blog makes me want to laugh and cry all at the same time.

Her name is Maren ...
her daughter is Leah...

What is Rett?
It is almost always seen in girls.
Occurs 1 of every 10,00 to 23,000 female births.
It strikes all racial and ethnic groups.
Symptoms appear after a period of normal development of six to eighteen months of life.
From then on there begins a regression of communication skills and purposeful use of her hands.

Maren inspires me. Honest and well-written are her blog  entries, and I find myself pouring over them day after day. She talks about the trials and blessings that being a "rett mom" brings... and I can't help but think..."Wow she is so couragous and strong."

I am creating a list of questions to ask Maren and would love if you would join. Get to know her better by hopping over to her blog here and then email (cristidame@gmail.com) me or leave a comment below with your question.
Stay tuned for her answers!

P.S. SAVE THE DATE: December 16th we are hosting a Rett Syndrome Benefit Concert with Mindy Gledhill in Boise.
